God, I offer myself to Thee to build with me and to do with me as Thou wilt. Relieve me of the bondage of self that I may better do Thy Will. Take away my difficulties that victory over them may bear witness to those I would help of Thy Power, Thy Love, and Thy Way of Life. May I do Thy Will always.

Oh, that You would bless me indeed and enlarge my territory, that Your hand would always be with me, and that You would keep me from evil.

Thank You for keeping me sober today. Amen.

I take a simple view of living. It is keep your eyes open and get on with it. -- Laurence Olivier, LA Times, Feb 26, 1978

... it is always the simple that produces the marvelous. -- Amelia E. Barr, All the Days of My Life

Farmer Kyle was at it again yesterday. I awoke just before sunrise and sat on my kitchen stoop looking at my garden, drinking my coffee, and smoking my cigarettes. After a while, I dressed and began by dissembling Max and Dixie's dog kennels that have been sitting out in my sideyard but couldn't quite finish because one of the screws had rusted.

I moved on to the ironroot weed tree stump I had attempted to dig out last week. I sawed off two remaining roots going under the sidewalk and finally got the stump out. Hooray!

I continued sawing all the leftover stumps and knots on the monster holly tree I had cut back, and then I began digging a 16" hole beside my kitchen stoop in preparation for the "Joseph's Coat" climbing bareroot rose due to arrive this week. I found that one may enter an almost Zen-like state during the simple digging of a hole. It took a while, but I finished. Finally, I moved on to finish weeding, raking, and bagging the monkey grass border in front. After that, Farmer Kyle was tard.

Just after I finished around one o'clock, my old upstairs neighbors Mike and Marcia and their 1 1/2 year old son Jack came by to visit our neighbor Karen. It was good to see them again. I visited a while and then went inside to take a hot oatmeal and chamomille bath which I followed with an hour-long nap.

Later, I drove out to the nursery to pick up some rose bedding mix and on to my niece Grace's one-year birthday party. She looked adorable in her little powder blue chiffon birthday dress. We had burgers and birthday cake and then watched her siblings Hailee and Brooks help open her birthday presents.

I raced back to hear one of our "Rebellion Dogs" members Nathan tell his story at the eight o'clock AA meeting. This was his first time to tell it, and he did a fine job. He seemed very composed. Dan and I went to Lucky's afterwards to get him something to eat and stayed a while writing the beginnings of a personal ad for me. Dan has always said that he is very good at writing them for others, and I wanted him to help me write one before he left. My allergies were killing me, so I came home, took my meds and some Sudafed, and went straight to bed.

All in all, another good day.
