peace
God, I offer myself to Thee to build with me and to do with me as Thou wilt. Relieve me of the bondage of self that I may better do Thy Will. Take away my difficulties that victory over them may bear witness to those I would help of Thy Power, Thy Love, and Thy Way of Life. May I do Thy Will always.
Oh, that You would bless me indeed and enlarge my territory, that Your hand would always be with me, and that You would keep me from evil.
Thank You for keeping me sober today. Amen.
A peace is of the nature of a conquest,
For then both parties nobly are subdued,
And neither party loser.
-- William Shakespeare, Henry IV, Part 2, Act 4, Scene 2
Peace is normally a great good, and normally it coincides with righteousness, but it is righteousness and not peace which should bind the conscience of a nation as it should bind the conscience of an individual; and neither a nation nor an individual can surrender conscience to another’s keeping. -- Theodore Roosevelt, Sixth annual message to Congress, December 4, 1906
Peace can endure only so long as humanity really insists upon it, and is willing to work for it and sacrifice for it. Twenty- five years ago American fighting men looked to the statesmen of the world to finish the work of peace for which they fought and suffered; we failed them, we failed them then, we cannot fail them again and expect the world to survive again. -- Franklin D. Roosevelt, Address to Congress on Yalta Conference, March 1, 1945
I had a great weekend. After work in the office on Friday, I attended the six o'clock AA meeting. I was planning to just swing by home before joining other members from our group to see Troy that night, but I had received a voicemail message from my old sponsor Dan who asked if he could stay at my place that night. I called him back and told him that he definitely could. I cleaned up, changed the sheets, and put away some things, and I have to say that my place looked quite nice.
He arrived after having dinner with his old roommate Brooks, and we talked for quite a while. Just talking to him about my feeling "less than" last week regarding others' promotions and raises relieved my anxiety about it.
Saturday morning, we had some coffee, got dressed, went to Lucky's for some breakfast, and then went to the Men's AA meeting at Lambda. Everyone there was very glad to see him. Several of us went to Cafe Brazil for breakfast afterwards. After Dan and I came back, he left to go buy a wedding present for later that day, and I prepared to hear my sponsee's Fifth Step. Charlie arrived at two o'clock but neglected to bring his inventory, so we decide to go over to his apartment. We walked in to a gilded Victorian extravaganza. Who knew that a bear could be such a frilly queen? We spent several hours doing his Fifth Step, and then we were finished.
I came home, made some dinner, and then begin playing around with the family tree CD that I had received in the mail that day. It had been stuck on my old computer that died so I paid somebody to retrieve the data. I hadn't had a chance to look at it in almost three years. I'm very excited about getting back into genealogy this summer. I even found some of my dad's ancestors in the early twentieth century census records.
On Sunday, Dan came down from Brooks' condo, and we had some coffee before going to the brunch that Amelia and Disco Dan had arranged for him at Zaguan Cafe. Afterwards, I did some window shopping for furniture at Century Modern down in Deep Ellum. I came home and did some more family tree stuff and rested.
Last night, we had our monthly business meeting at Lambda. We continue to spend more than we take in, but we're in much better shape than we were a year ago. All in all, it's been a very good few days.
