surly
God, I offer myself to Thee to build with me and to do with me as Thou wilt. Relieve me of the bondage of self that I may better do Thy Will. Take away my difficulties that victory over them may bear witness to those I would help of Thy Power, Thy Love, and Thy Way of Life. May I do Thy Will always.
Oh, that You would bless me indeed and enlarge my territory, that Your hand would always be with me, and that You would keep me from evil.
Thank You for keeping me sober today. Amen.
I love a gay and sociable wisdom, and shun harshness and austerity in behaviour, holding every surly countenance suspect. -- Michel de Montaigne, “On Some Verses of Virgil,” The Essays
If you have only one smile in you, give it to the people you love. Don’t be surly at home, then go out in the street and start grinning “Good morning” at total strangers. -- Maya Angelou, Singin’ and Swingin’ and Gettin’ Merry Like Christmas
Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of earth,
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings ...
And while with silent lifting mind I’ve trod
The high, untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand and touched the face of God.
-- John Gillespie Magee, High Flight
Oh, what a week! I've rarely been more irritable and discontent, and everybody around me knew it, particularly at work. I still don't fully know the reason why, but according to my sponsor, it always has to do with self-centeredness, the exact nature of my character defects. I've felt pressured to give them the correct Customer Accounts Receivable balance, and I was unable to do so until yesterday. In the meantime, I became very angry about the whole thing because I was basically redoing the erroneous work of my predecessor for the past six months.
Anyway, that seems to have passed now. I found time to finally get my hair cut and to chair an AA meeting last night on the solution.
On Monday, I was reviewing a scholarship application, and one of the questions was "What is the most romantic thing you've ever done for someone or someone has done for you?" After reading that, I realized that any of the instances I could recall happened between eight and twenty years ago, and that saddens me. I think it's due time for a little romance in my life again.
